Awareness as a Key to Successful Therapy

Updated: Jan 3, 2019

What is "Awareness" and why is it so important? Well, it is no less than the centre of Gestalt therapy. But what does it mean? How it can be useful for a client? The awareness provides you with an opportunity to identify real possibilities and choices in your life.

Awareness also helps you to identify obstacles preventing you from reaching your full potential. Such obstacles have an impact on your health and well-being. In Gestalt therapy you are being encouraged to become aware of your own feelings and behaviour. What impacts does your behaviour have on your surrounding "here and now"? New insights, new behaviour and new decisions arise as a result of self-awareness focus and thus a self-healing process can be engaged.

How to achieve awareness through therapy? There are three pillars:

  1. Contact with your surrounding: This happens through focus on looking, listening, touching, talking, moving, smelling and tasting. It enables you to grow in your environment by interacting with it. It also enables you to change and form your own environment, actually.

  2. Here and Now: The point is to focus on what is happening in present moment rather than worrying about past or future.

  3. Responsibility: The point is to learn to take over the responsibility for your life rather than blaming the others for what happened to you.

What else is important in Gestalt therapy?

  • Accept who you are right now.

  • Live now, stay in the present.

  • Live here, be with the present.

  • Stop with imagination, experience your reality.

  • Stop overthinking.

  • Express yourself, rather than manipulate, explain, justify or judge.

  • Accept no "you should" from the others.

  • Take full responsibility for your own actions, feelings and thoughts.
